Second graders have been introduced to coding (computer programming) in Ms. Gerrish’s computer class. Ms. Gerrish says, “Statistically, 1 million of the best jobs in the nation go unfilled because only 1 in 4 schools teach kids how to code. I am happy to say we do here in Lebanon. Currently all students in grades 2-5 have a coding account at code.org. It’s accessible via my webpage and kids are encouraged to code at home if they would like.”
“Even if you don’t have a classroom full of computer programmers, learning the fundamentals of coding provides kids with skills that will serve them well in virtually any career they choose in the future. While the kids think it’s “cool” to code, I’m more interested in the educational benefits it provides such as: higher level critical thinking, problem solving, perseverance, collaboration and communication,” said Ms. Gerrish.
