Opening Letter From the Superintendent 8-28-16

August 28, 2016

Dear Students and Parents,

We are busy preparing our school buildings and plans for student learning, as we eagerly await the beginning of the 2017 school year.  As strange and impossible as this may seem, the class of 2029 will be stepping into our Kindergarten classrooms on Tuesday, September 6!

Our first student day for Kindergarten through ninth grade students will be Tuesday, September 6.  Sophomores through seniors report on Wednesday, September 7.  Please see the online district calendar  for open house information.

Transportation has added new routing software that is very user-friendly for families.  You can check your child’s bus stops, pick up, and drop off times and locations by accessing the Transportation tab on the district website.  InfoFinder I is at the top of the site and provides step by step directions.  We will not be listing in local papers, due to the ease of access to InfoFinder I.

Last year, we used the BlackBoard Connect to communicate with homes (i.e., snow days, emergencies, reminders).  Its reliability and cost were not enticing for this year, so we have opted for the Remind.com system this year.  This free resource can be accessed on any cell phone or computer .  You will shortly be receiving a cell phone text notifying you that you are enrolled in Remind.  If you do not wish to be enrolled, please follow the directions to unsubscribe.  If you have a different cell number than the one currently posted in Infinite Campus, please update your number through the school secretary or guidance.

Thursday schedules across the district are different this year, so please watch for specific information from your child’s school.  Just please be aware that Thursday, September 8 is NOT a PD schedule, so students will be in attendance according to the schedule of any other school day of the week.  If you have questions about this, please contact your school’s main office.

It has been a busy summer with curriculum, instructional practice, and assessment development.  As you know, we are in relentless pursuit of continuously improving student literacy learning and performance.  We saw remarkable gains for incoming Kindergarten students involved in our Kindergarten JumpStart program.  We also saw strong gains for our K-2 students in 2015-2016, largely due to improved specific literacy instructional practices through teacher work and classroom observation and feedback with our literacy coaches and an elementary consultant.  We will continue to expand our focus this year to encompass grades 3-7.  Also, NHS eighth grade students will experience a six-week program called Sound Training, which has demonstrated stunning success in The United Kingdom and two US high schools, one in Florida and one in California.  Sound Training utilizes fast, focused multi-sensory instruction to boost vocabulary development and literacy skills.

MSAD #60 is on the move and looks forward to partnering with you to make this school year memorable for students.  We look forward to meeting and working with your child and you this year.  Best wishes for a successful start.
