Dear Principal Ledue,
My name is Olivia Griset and I am the President Elect for the Maine Environmental Education Association. I want to inform you that your school has been selected from a very competitive pool of schools in Maine to be the Maine Environmental Education Association’s 2015 School of the Year!
Congratulations to both the Lebanon Elementary School (4th & 5th) and Hanson Elementary School (K-3rd) for your commitment and dedication to sustainability and environmental education. Your good work stands as a role model for other schools in Maine to follow!
The following were the standards we used to judge eligible schools:
The Maine Environmental Education Association School of the Year Award is designed to recognize an outstanding Maine public or private school or school program that demonstrates a commitment to environmental education in the State of Maine.
reducing the school’s environmental impact and/or improving energy efficiency
creating a healthy school environment (i.e. high school standards for nutrition, fitness, physical environment such as air and water quality, and quantity and quality of outdoor time for both students and staff)
environmental and sustainability education that incorporates service learning.
The MEEA Board of Directors feel that the Lebanon Schools fit the awards criteria perfectly and that your programs are an inspirational example of what other public school programs around our state can aspire to be. You have created a culture at your schools for innovation and have centered much learning around experiences in nature and exploring the outside world. It is obvious that you have motivated and already impacted many many students lives for the positive. We understand the many stumbling blocks to creating such an impressive and ground-breaking school environment and we commend you for your work.
