Proposed Thursday Schedule

Proposed Schedule Options for the 2016-17 school year

In an attempt to achieve three important goals

  1. Equalize the instructional day and teacher workday across all district schools
  2. Create equitable collaborative time for all teachers K-12
  3. Increase instructional time for all students

MSAD 60 leadership has two possible schedule proposals the school board is currently considering. Both achieve the three goals outlined above. There are pros and cons to each option.  We would love to hear from parents and staff about your preference.

Pros

  • Current practice for NMS and NHS. It’s working well.
  • Older students benefit from the extra sleep on Thursdays

Cons

  • Older students would not be home to provide afternoon childcare
  • Later student dismissal on Thursdays
  • Could create a greater need for early dismissals for sports on Thursdays

Option 2: Early Release for All

7:40—1:10

Pros:

  • Overlap of collaborative time would allow for cross building PD work K-12
  • Allows for older children to care for younger children/ work
  • Eliminates need for any athletic early dismissals
  • Common start time for school everyday
  • No need for a 3:00pm dismissal at NMS/ NHS

Cons

  • Research indicates the later start is good for teens.
  • Unsupervised teens get into more trouble in the afternoon hours; in the AM they sleep!
  • Gap between the end of school day and start of athletic practices would create a need to develop a system for supervising students. This could be a lot of kids.
  • MS/HS Kids would have a shorter period of access to teachers for after school help on Thursdays (1:10-1:45)

Both plans provide the exact same amount of student instructional time K-12

Both plans provide the exact same amount of teacher collaborative time K-12

Both plans provide more instructional time for students than our current schedule.

Both plans are workable from a transportation perspective.
