MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ MEETING on May 12, 2016

 

A regular meeting of the Board of Directors was held at the Noble High School in North Berwick, Maine on May 12, 2016 at 7:00 pm, with all members present except Mr. Smith and Ms. Olean. The student representative and the press were absent.  There were 3 people in the audience.

Ms. Potter made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Alwin to approve the minutes of May 5, 2016.  All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

Public Input: None

Ms Wheeler made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Alwin, that the Computation and Declaration of Votes dated May 10, 2016 and attached hereto be approved.  It was further moved and seconded that the Computation and Declaration of Votes be entered upon the records of Maine School Administrative District No. 60 as well as that a certified copy of the Computation and Declaration of Votes be sent to each of the Municipal Clerks within the District. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

Student Report May 12, 2016

Last Friday was the Juniors Prom. Everyone looked great and had a lot of fun, there was a lot of warm feedback in school and on Social Media.

Last Week and this week is College Board testing for those who took AP classes this year.

Tuesday, May 10 was the Special Olympics at Noble High school for the MSAD #60 students.  It was a great turnout and a beautiful day.

Today the baseball team has a game Home vs Gorham and Ladies Lacrosse has a game Home vs Marshwood

Shaughnessey Gower pitched a two-hitter and Marisa Cipola had three hits and four RBIs to lead the Knights to Wednesday’s 14-1 win over Westbrook in Class A South .(Not my words, but I didn’t know how else to word it, so anyways we won, yay!!)
This week is spirit week. Here are the themes

  • Monday (5/9): College/Career
  • Tuesday (5/10): Athlete Day
  • Wednesday (5/11): Movie Day
    • 12th: Grease
    • 11th: Star Wars
    • 10th: Harry Potter
    • 9th: Pixar (incredibles, monsters inc., finding nemo, cars, wall-e etc.)
    • 8th: Minions
  • Thursday (5/12): America Day
  • Friday (5/13): Class Color War

So this week, there wasn’t a ton of student participation, and the majority of the student body thought it was lame compared to other spirit weeks this year

The Superintendent then shared lists of the probationary teachers moving from first year to second year.  Year One: Sarah Chadbourne, Kelsea Jacobs, Sarah West, Brenna Whitnet, Cassie Clement, Karen Colby, Debbie Moores, Michelle Raymond, Angela Kneeland, Katherine Claesson, Rachel Lee, Jamie Jones, Jessica Cutliffe, Jessica Miller, Matt Eaton, Michelle Johnson, Nicole Hutzler, Elizabeth Barker, Ingrid Strange, and Rick Melanson.

Ms. Alwin made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Wheeler to accept the nominations for probationary teachers as amended. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

The Superintendent then shared lists of the probationary teachers moving from second year to third year: Steph Sylvia, Shelley Kosek, Carolyne Frye, Michelle Smith, Kathleen Johnson, Brianne Springer, Karen Adams, Sarah Moe, Amy Creighton, Karissa Cyr, Samantha Grace, Irene Guzman-Rothwell, Matthew Lowell, Laura Mazzola, David Perkins, Sharon Taylor, Heather Tyler.  Ms. Wheeler made the motion and it was seconded by Mr. Price to accept the nominations for probationary teachers Year two to year three. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

Ms. Wheeler made the motion and it was seconded by Mr. Price to nominate Ms. Elva Lovejoy as principal for the Knowlton Elementary School. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

The Superintendent put forth the name of Ms. Elise Bothwel as the art teacher for the Hussey School for the upcoming school year.  Ms. Wheeler made the motion and it was seconded by Mr. Price to accept the nomination of Ms. Elise Bothwel as a new art teacher at the Hussey School. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

The Superintendent then shared several resignation letters of Ms. Amy Moody of  NMS, Erin Cote of MHA, Andrea Cole of Knowlton School, Kaitlyn Eastman of Hanson School, Candace Flanders of NMS, Brittany McNary at Hussey School, Michelle Grieve of NBES, and Heather Hastings of NBES. Ms. Wheeler made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Potter to accept the resignations of the above teachers. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

The Superintendent shared the resignation of Ms. Janice Eldridge who has been with the district at Noble High School for 15 years.  She shared a letter of appreciation for the support given to her over the years. Ms. Wheeler made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Potter to accept the resignation of Ms. Janice Eldridge with regret. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

 Other Business:

The Superintendent shared with the board an extended Learning Opportunity to visit China in the spring of 2017.

The Superintendent also shared some information regarding specific warrant articles that were noted as new or not recently recognized.

Ms. Potter asked about the cost of buses for field trips for our schools and whether or not it was cheaper to hire buses from other companies. The Superintendent shared that he would follow up with that and get back to the board.

Ms. Potter asked about the discipline protocols and behavioral guidelines for the district and if we were reviewing them on a regular basis. The Superintendent shared with the board that we are developing a task force to address this very issue.

Mr. Smith entered the meeting at 7:29 pm.

Mr. Larry Rose of Berwick shared with the board his concerns regarding the issue of substance abuse, how it’s being taught and how it’s being presented. He had some concerns regarding how there is an important aspect of choice that he did not see this in the materials that came home from the Noble Middle School.  He was concerned about the mixed messages that it might send. We will have the middle administrative team reach out to him to discuss his concerns and offer some clarification.

Mr. Price made the motion and it was seconded by Mr. Smith to go into executive session for negotiations pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A.405§(6)(D).  All members voted in favor and the motion passed. In at 7:43 pm. Out at 8:58 pm.

Mr. Smith made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Alwin to go into executive session for employment of an employee pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A.405§(6)(A).  All members voted in favor and the motion passed.  In at 9:05 pm. Out at 9:18 pm.

Ms. Potter made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Wheeler to adjourn at 9:18  pm.  All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
