MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ MEETING on January 5, 2017
A regular meeting of the Board of Directors was held at the Noble High School in North Berwick, Maine on January 5, 2017 at 6:30 pm, with all members present except Ms. Hopper. There were 8 in the audience.
Ms. Wheeler made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Olean to go into executive session for the consideration of a long term suspension of a student pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A. §405 (6)(B). All members voted in favor and the motion passed. In at 6:34 pm.
Mr. Price made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Wheeler to suspend the student under consideration for a period of up to 45 days for a risk assessment pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A. §405 (6)(B). All members voted in favor and the motion passed. In at 7:06 pm.
Ms. Hopper entered the meeting at 6:52 pm.
Mr. Smith made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Olean to adjust the agenda tonight to add the acknowledgment of a gift by Boulanger Paving.
Mr. Price will be the timekeeper.
Ms. Wheeler will be the norms checker.
Ms. Brenda Gagne, Adult Education Director, shared the updated brochure for the spring sessions. She also shared that the CNA program graduated 6 people and they all have employment.
Ms. Olean made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Potter to approve the amended minutes of December 1, 2016. All members voted in favor except Mr. Smith, who abstained, and the motion passed.
Mr. Cowan shared a donation from Boulanger Paving of approximately $4500 for the renovations on the Noble Middle School track. Mr. Price made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Neubert to approve the donation. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

- “NORTH BERWICK — The last time Noble High won its own wrestling invitational was 2011. That was also the last season the Knights won the Class A championship. The Knights stopped one losing streak Friday, winning the 35th annual two-day Noble Invitational with 188 points.” (Steve Craig, Staff Writer)

- Midterms for the high school are January 17-20
The board then heard from Ms. Rebecca Dewan and Mr. Chad Dickerson, music faculty within the district. They presented an overview of the music program. Music Program Review
Mr. Nick Ellard, art teacher at the North Berwick Elementary Schools and Mary Hurd Academy, shared an overview of the art program in MSAD 60. Visual Arts Program Review
The Superintendent shared an article from the Portland Press Herald regarding Martin and Jennifer England and their interest in giving back to the community. England Portland Press Herald Article
The Superintendent then updated the board regarding some concerns regarding the Athletic Department and the procedures that we will follow going forward.
Ms. Kara Couture, Berwick parent, shared her concerns regarding the athletic program and the parental negativity that is being perpetuated by a few parents. In her opinion, it’s ruining the opportunities for students to enjoy the sports program.
The board discussed this and determined that it would be beneficial for it to be put on a board agenda in the near future, to discuss what our norms are and typical evaluation procedures.
Mr. Cowan asked again about the participation rate for winter sports.
Mr. Price reminded the board about the public input on Dec. 1st regarding graduation items. The administration will address these concerns at the administrative level, not at the board level.
Ms. Wheeler made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Olean to go into an executive session pursuant to 1 MRSA 405(6)(D) Labor Contract Discussion re: the Teacher’s Association. All members voted in favor and the motion passed. In at 8:49 pm. Out at 9:29 pm.
Mr. Smith made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Wheeler to go into an executive session pursuant to 1M.R.S.A. §405(6)(A)Employment of Officials. All members voted and the motion was passed. In at 9:29 pm. Out at 9:52 pm.
Mr. Price made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Neubert to adjourn the meeting. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
