MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ MEETING on April 28, 2016

 

A regular meeting of the Board of Directors was held at the Noble High School in North Berwick, Maine on April 28, 2016 at 7:00 pm with all members except Ms. Rose and Mr. Cowan  present. The student representative was present, and the press was absent.  There were 3 people in the audience.

Ms. Potter made the motion and it was seconded by Mr. Price to approve the minutes of April 7, 2016 as amended.  All members voted in favor except Ms. Alwin, who abstained, and the motion passed.

Public Input:

Superintendent Connolly introduced Carrie Thurston. Ms. Thurston spoke about creating a literacy environment in which primary students demonstrate 90% proficiency, Carrie Thurston Presentation.  The Board asked clarify questions.

Ms. Olean reviewed upcoming  budget dates;

           May 5, 2016- District Budget Meeting Barry S Moore Gymnasium, 6:30 PM

           May 10, 2015- District Budget Referendum

Superintendent Connolly brought forward dates for future school board meetings; May 12, May 26, June 9, and June 30th. At the June 30th meeting the new board members will be seated and reorganization of the board will occur. There will not be a meeting during the month of July. Meetings will resume on August 18th and September 8th.

NHS Student Report:

Next Friday is the Junior Prom.

Tomorrow the High school’s Chamber Singers and Jazz Band is going on tour to Noble Middle School, Lebanon Elementary, and North Berwick Elementary.

Grades close this Friday for Progress Reports

Last Friday the Juniors had their career day, where they either did a job shadow or visited a college campus.

The girls varsity lacrosse team has a game today at McAuley.

The Superintendent then presented a nomination for Tyler Goodwin as Food Service Director. Mr. Goodwin is currently the Food Service Director for Wells Ogunquit Consolidated School District. Mr. Goodwin brings a wide variety of experience to the position.  This experience includes a successful Farm to School Program, where local fresh produce is used year-round. He is the president of the York and Cumberland Counties purchasing co-op and works with local restaurants. Mr. Connolly expressed what an impressive pool of candidates had applied for the position. Ms. Alwin made the motion  to accept the nomination of Mr. Tyler, and it was seconded by Mr. Smith. All members voted in favor, and the motion passed.

The Superintendent then shared the resignations of Mr. Samuel Smithwick, Multiple Pathways teacher and Ms. Samantha Tanguay, biology teacher, both at Noble High School. Ms. Potter made the motion and it was seconded by Mr. Smith to accept the letters of resignation. All members voted in favor, and the motion was passed.

Other Business:

Mr. Kelly Smith updated progress on the track at Noble Middle School. Both Turcotte Concrete and Boulanger Paving have donated time and materials.

Mr. Connolly shared with the Board that Berwick Tiger Scouts have asked to donate a “Buddy Bench”. A “Buddy Bench” is located on a playground and is for students to go and sit at when they are looking for friends to play with. Stoneage Stoneworks of Berwick will be donating the materials. Ms. Wheeler made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Alwin to accept the donation of$2200 in materials for a “Buddy Bench”.

The Superintendent shared the District Music Concert was a great success with standing room only. Ms. Wheeler asked if perhaps, because of the size of the event, it could be moved to a different venue, such as the football field. Mr. Connolly would look into this for future events.

The Superintendent shared that Mr. Adam Reid from Noble High School would again be taking students to the Spring Lime Rock Electrathon in Connecticut. Our students will bring two homemade electric cars to the competition next weekend.

Mr. Connolly also spoke about the National History Day that took place recently. Noble High School had 17 out of 339 students competing. Noble High School had five first place winners, 2 second  and 1 third place winners.  This group of amazing students was led by Noble High School’s Adina Hunter.

Mr. Connolly asked for a third executive session. Mr. Smith made the motion to amend the agenda to add a third session, and it was seconded by Mr. Price.  All members voted affirmatively, and the motion passed.

Ms. Wheeler made the motion and it was seconded by Mr. Price  to go into Executive Session Pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A 405(6)(D) Negotiations. All members voted in favor, and the motion was passed. In 8:40pm. Out at 8:55pm.

Ms. Potter made the motion and it was seconded by Ms.Wheeler to go into Executive Session Pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A 405(6)(D) Negotiations. All members voted in favor and the motion was passed. In 8:55pm. Out at 9:25pm.

Ms. Potter made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Wheeler to go into Executive Session Pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A §405(6)(A) Employment of Employee. All members voted in favor and the motion was passed. In 9:25pm. Out at 9:57pm.

Ms.  Alwin made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Potter  to adjourn at  9:57pm.  All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
