 MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ MEETING June 15, 2017

 

A regular meeting of the Board of Directors was held at the Noble High School in North Berwick, Maine on June 15, 2017 at 6:00 pm, with all members present except Ms. Hopper.  There were 13 in the audience.  

Ms. Hopper entered the meeting at 6:11 pm.

Ms. Potter  made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Neubert to go into executive session pursuant to Executive Session Pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A §405(6)(B) Readmittance of a student. All members voted in favor and the motion passed. In at 6:05 pm. Out at  6:21 pm

Mr. Price  made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Manley to readmit the student under consideration.  All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

Ms. Potter made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Neubert to go into executive session pursuant to Executive Session Pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A §405(6)(B) Readmittance of a student. All members voted in favor and the motion passed. In at 6:32 pm. Out at  6:54 pm

Mr. Price  made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Manley to readmit the student under consideration.  All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

Ms. Potter  made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Neubert to go into executive session pursuant to Executive Session Pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A §405(6)(B) Readmittance of a student. All members voted in favor and the motion passed. In at 7:11 pm. Out at  7:32 pm

Public Input

Mr. Gerard Lanoie, of Lebanon, shared his ongoing concerns regarding the hiring of the football coach and that in his, and others, opinions board policy was ignored.  He gave statistics and explained his concerns about the program and why he continues to bring forth his thoughts. Mr. Todd Croteau, of Berwick, also shared his concerns regarding the hiring of the football coach.

The board then discussed the seating of chair and vice chair for the 17/18 school year and agreed that they’d like to wait til the new Berwick members were appointed so that the full board could make the changes. All agreed and it will scheduled for July 24th.

Mr. Price made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Beal that the Computation and Declaration of Votes, dated June 13, 2017 and attached hereto be approved. It was further moved and seconded that the Computation and Declaration of Votes be entered upon the records of Maine School Administrative District No. 60 as well as that a certified copy of the Computation and Declaration of Votes be sent to each of the Municipal Clerks within the District. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

Ms.Potter made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Neubert to accept the minutes of the June 1 meeting.  All members voted in favor except Ms. Beal who abstained and the motion passed.

Ms. Heidi Early-Hersey, Ms. Jayne Perkins and Mr. Chuck Bragdon then shared a program overview of the Social Studies curriculum. Social Studies Review Grades 6/7,  Social Studies Review Grades 8-12

The Superintendent then shared the retirement letter of Ms. Phyllis Brooks, a Special education teacher at NMS, the resignation letter of Ms. Tricia Lepage a special education teacher at the Knowlton schools, the resignation letter of Ms. Renee Winkler, a third grade teacher at North Berwick Elementary School, and the resignation letter of Ms. Alex Mangan, special education teacher at the Hanson School in Lebanon.  Ms. Potter made the motion and it was seconded by Mr. Price to accept the letters with regret. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

The Superintendent then shared letters of resignation from Ms Karen Ward, administrative assistant with the food service and transportation dept, Ms. Laura Costello, special education secretary, letter of retirement from Peg Doyle, education technician at NHS.  They will be missed.   

No Student Report this week.

Mr. Price  made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Potter to add DJH as a second reading to the agenda.  All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

Ms. Austin shared a first reading of policy JL the MSAD 60 Wellness Policy on Physical Activity and Nutrition.  The board considered this their first reading. The policy committee will review it and make a recommendation at the next meeting on July 24th, 2017.

The Superintendent reviewed policy DJH with the board. Ms. Neubert made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Beal to accept policy DJH with the requested changes. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

The Superintendent requested authorization to hire teachers, support staff and AFL-CIO members over the summer. Ms. Potter made the motion and it was seconded by Mr. Price to allow the Superintendent to make final hiring decisions about Teachers, Support Staff and AFL-CIO contract members. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

Other Business:

The Superintendent shared with the board a donation from the Hannaford’s in North Berwick for the North Berwick Elementary School for $1,000. Ms. Beal made the motion and it was accepted by Ms. Manley to gratefully accept the funds. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

The Superintendent shared with the board a nice donation from Mr. Joe Pelletier from North Berwick of two musical instruments to the music program. It is very much appreciated.

The Superintendent shared with the board that Ms. Lori Barrett representing Caldwell Bankers made a donation of $500 to the Mary Hurd Back Pack Program.  Ms. Beal made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Manley to accept the donation. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.

Baseball, Boys Track and Girls Track were all recipients of the Maine Principal’s Association Sportsmanship Award this spring.The girl runners have now received the MPA Sportsmanship award 4 seasons in a row, starting with Outdoor track last spring, Cross Country this fall, Indoor Track this Winter and Spring Track in the Spring of 2017.  The Highest Grade Point Average goes to Softball with an average GPA of 3.423.  The overall GPA for athletics this spring was 3.182.

Mr. Price noted that Berwick Sewer District will be donating some equipment for the NHS chemistry department.  More to follow this summer.

Ms. Beal noted that she would like to volunteer to be a communication liaison for the Lebanon Town offices to help keep everyone up to date.

Kelly Smith of Berwick thanked the board for their work on the budget and let it. He also shared that there are over 80 students already signed up for the football season which is a sharp increase. Several assistant coaches have agreed to work in the program.    

Mr. Price made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Neubert to go into executive session pursuant to Executive Session Pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A §405(6)(A) Duties of Officials. All members voted in favor and the motion passed. In at 9:38 pm. Out at  10:14 pm

Ms. Neubert  made the motion and it was seconded by Mr. Price to adjourn.  All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
